Accounts and sessions

Register, sign in, recover, change your password, and end sessions.

Nodus accounts are created against a Relay. Authentication uses Argon2id password hashing and opaque, server-side sessions delivered as an HttpOnly cookie (web) or stored in the OS keychain (mobile). There are no JWTs and no tokens exposed to client-side JavaScript.

Create an account

  1. Open /auth in the web client (or the sign-in screen in the mobile app).
  2. Choose Create account, pick an email and password.
  3. The client derives a 24-word recovery phrase, shows it once, and requires you to confirm you have saved it.
  4. Only the recovery public key is enrolled — the phrase itself is never stored server-side.

Store the recovery phrase somewhere safe and offline. It is the only way to recover the account if all trusted devices are lost.

Enter your email and password. On success the Relay issues a session; the web client proxies it into a hardened cookie (HttpOnly, SameSite=Lax, Secure in production).

Recover an account

If you can reach the Relay:

  1. Choose Recover on the auth screen.
  2. Request a recovery challenge and sign it with the recovery key.
  3. The Relay verifies the signature and issues a new session.

If the Internet is unavailable but a paired Storage Node is on the LAN, recovery can be performed locally against the node. See Recovery.

Change your password

Settings → Change password re-verifies your current password and rotates the session.

Sign out

  • Sign out ends the current session.
  • Sign out all devices (Settings, or Security) revokes every other session while keeping the caller signed in.

A revoked or expired session is rejected by the Relay WebSocket with close code 4001, which signs the client out cleanly.
